Where We Stand Now

Currently, we are in the Embryonic Phase of the experiment, the first of five. During this phase, the objective is to produce the models and information required to build a self-sufficient city. A book presenting the experiment, “A Sound Plan for a Crazy Idea”  (Juan Vargas), will be ready for publishing in 2017. Parallel to this, we will launch 12 research projects in different areas. Each research project will produce in-depth books and software prototypes.

The Experiment v1.0

After graduating from university in 1994, Juan Vargas began developing the idea of a self-sufficient city. He conducted research on his own and wrote a book proposing the idea. In 1999, he set up the Ecotek Foundation in Bogotá, Colombia to launch the experiment. The project didn’t go very far because the armed conflict in Colombia was at its peak, so neither the government nor the other stakeholders paid much attention to the proposal.

Young Juan went broke and closed shop in 2002. He then went on to a different line of work, but he continued to advance the development model, albeit at a much slower pace. Since 2010, he has worked on  on a new book that updates the experiment with recent advances in technology and emphasises on a plan to execute this ambitious experiment.
