During this first phase of the Pukika Experiment, the Embryonic Phase, we are conducting research to develop and test the models and systems that run a self-sufficient city. These models and systems comprise the different areas that allow a modern city to operate. Soon we will be announcing a plan to scale up this research. Let’s take a look at the research areas we are focusing on.

 

Fractal Urbanism

This deals with optimising the urban model of a self-sufficient city. How to minimise the road network but offer adequate access to public transport. Defining the quantity and location of public spaces at different scales.

 

Economic Model and Multidimensional Monetary System

How to produce all goods and services in an economy where everything operates under Circular and Sharing Economy, as well as Cradle-to-Cradle manufacturing. How a Multidimensional Monetary System can guarantee gender and income inequality, and make sure that personal financial interests don’t come before the preservation of the ecosystem.

 

Energy Network

Supplying a modern city without any fossil fuels. Finding the right mix of renewable energy and storage depending on the location. Reducing energy consumption by adjusting consumption behaviour.

 

Water and Sanitation Systems

How to manage the water resources and distribute water through the irrigation system and Water Loops that supply water and reuse it in shorter cycles for different uses before releasing it into the soil or water reservoirs.

 

Transport System & Distribution

A binary transport system using only bikes and autonomous pods. The model calculates the number of pod required, energy consumption and travel times. Architecture of the autonomous Pod Fleet software.

 

Communications Network & Data Analytics

What communications infrastructure is required to provide an ubiquitous, free and fast connection.

 

Food Production Model

Define the amount of food supply relative to a population, and determine all inputs required: labour, water, energy and fertilisers. Create a matrix that harvesting times and what species are suitable for permaculture, hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponics.

 

Manufacturing Matrix

Database of all raw materials, materials, components and products, including their life cycle plan according to Cradle-to-Cradle principles. Include the labour and energy requirements, and run it through the demand projection to come up with a resource allocation schedule and a production schedule.

 

Healthcare System

How to offer an adequate health service and produce medicines. Inventory of medical equipment required. Integration of healthy lifestyle (healthy food, sports, yoga and meditation).

 

Education & HR Structure

Development of the Education Mapper and the HR Management system. Planning of the Education Sector.

 

Governance Model

The operation of the 15 sectors and establishing the mechanisms for referendums and elections.

 

Legal & Financial Feasibility

This research will come towards the end of the Embryonic Phase. It deals with how a self-sufficient city can be built within the constitutional framework of a democratic country. Since all countries are different, this research focuses on the main structural variables. Once a rough budget is produced, a financial feasibility study will be carried out.
